Rev. Andrzej Yuknevich OMI is a priest of the Order of the Missionaries of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate based in the diocesan sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in Šumilina (Viciebsk voblasc). He is also the head of the coordination group of abbots and representatives of monastic communities in Belarus.

Rev. Andrzej Yukhnievich OMI together with Rev. Pavel Lemekh OMI was detained on 8 May 2024. The detention of the priests took place right after a meeting of the Viciebs diocese priests and novitiates which took place in their church. In addition, one Catholic believer from the Viciebsk diocese was also detained.

For some time the reason of detention was not known, and according to the leadership of the Order, the priests are accused of “subversive activity to the detriment of the Belarusian state.”

Before the trial, the priests were placed in a detention center in Viciebsk. The trial took place on 10 May 2024 via Skype. The clergy were subjected to administrative arrest. Rev. Yukhnievich got 15 days of arrest. The judgement was made by Natalia Karablina, judge of the Pieršamajski District Court of Viciebsk.

The priest was found guilty under Part 1 of Art. 24.23 Code of Administrative Offenses (Violation of the established procedure for picketing) for posting photographs of himself with a white-red-white flag and the flag of Ukraine on Facebook.

After 15 days, the priest was still not released. He was immediately subjected to a second administrative arrest under Art. 11.19 (Distribution of extremist materials).

Currently, the priest’s total prison term is at least 45 days.

On 4 June 2024, it became known that a criminal case had been opened against the priest. He was transferred from a temporary detention centre to a pre-trial detention centre.

On 25 June 2024, he was recognized by human rights activists as a political prisoner.

The hearing took place under Art. 23.34 of the Administrative Code (Unauthorized picketing) to consider the priest’s photograph of protests in Minsk with white-red-white flags, as well as the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine shared on Facebook “without the appropriate permission of the Shumilinsky District Executive Committee”. For this, the priest was detained, according to the protocol, at 10.15 pm on 8 May.

Rev. Lemekh explained that he did not intend to express socio-political views by placing the photo on a white-red-white background, and he posted the flag of Ukraine to express his grief over the deaths of civilians.

Judge of the Pieršamajski district Count of Viciebsk, Alena Zhuk, classified the priest’s offence as a gross offence aimed at “destabilising the situation in society and the state”. She took into account that Rev. Lemekh had already been subjected to administrative penalties, and considered a ten-day arrest an adequate punishment.

After serving 10 days, the priest was detained again and spent another four days behind bars.

Fr Lemech had to leave Belarus.

Вместе с ним был также задержан священник из его ордена ксендз Павел Лемех OMI. Кроме того, была задержана также одна из прихожанок. Задержание произошло после окончания встречи — священника был остановлен по дороге.

Первоначально причины задержания были неизвестны и как сообщило руководство ордена Миссионеров Облатов, священников обвиняют в «диверсионной деятельности во вред белорусскому государству».

До суда священники содержались в изоляторе временного содержания в Витебске. Суд прошел 10 мая 2024 года, священников судили по скайпу и подвергли административному аресту. Ксендз Юхневич получил 15 суток. Решение вынесла судья суда Первомайского района Витебска Наталья Кораблина.

Ксендзу-облату вменили размещение в facebook фотографий со своим изображением с бело-красно-белым флагом и флагом Украины. Это послужило основанием для привлечения клирика по ч. 1 ст. 24.23 КоАП (нарушение установленного порядка проведения пикетирования).

После окончания 15 суток священник так и не вышел на свободу. По состоянию на 9 июня 2024 года всё еще находился за решеткой.

Суд состоялся по ст. 23.34 КоАП («несанкционированное пикетирование»), которое якобы выразилось в том, что священник разместил в своем фейсбуке-профиле «без соответствующего разрешения Шумилинского районного исполнительного комитета» изображение протестов в Минске с флагами бело-красно-белого цвета, а также флага Украины голубо-желтого цвета.

Лемех объяснил, что размещением фотографии на бело-красно-белом фоне не выражал общественно-политические интересы, а флаг Украины разместил, чтобы высказать скорбь по поводу гибели мирных людей.

Судья Первомайского района г. Витебска Елена Жук посчитала, что правонарушение, совершенное ксендзом, относится к категории грубых и направлено на «дестабилизацию обстановки в обществе и государстве», а также учтя, что о. Павел Лемех уже подвергался административным взысканиям, посчитала адекватной мерой наложение взыскания в виде ареста сроком на 10 суток.

Как известно, после отбытия 10 суток, священник снова был задержан и провел за решеткой еще четыре дня.

«Этот ручник олицетворяет силу и надежду украинских женщин. Они не сдаются, несмотря на то, что их мужья и сыновья находятся в российском плену»,

— объяснила сотрудница посольства Украины при Святом Престоле Ирина Скаб.

Украинки вышили красными и черными нитками на ручнике фигурки людей, которые держатся за руки. Полотно оставили серым, чтобы передать состояние своей души. Свой дар женщины назвали «ручником-молитвой».

Понтифику передали также список имен и фото пленных и медицинский халат, символизирующий пленных медиков Мариупольского военного госпиталя. Кроме того, ему подарили картину «Украина победит», нарисованную 11-летним Максимом Бровченко из оккупированного Бердянска.

On 21 September 2022, the day of the announcement of mobilization in Russia, Maria Kasyanenko took part in an anti-war protest. She urged believers who cannot come to the protest to support its participants with prayer. For participation in the protest, Kasyanenko was arrested for 10 days.

Before the Mass, on 3 July 2022, retired actress Galina Borisova, a parishioner of the Moscow Roman Catholic church of St Louis, attached an anti-war leaflet to the Russian flag hanging in the altar. It contained «No bellum» (No war) written in Latin and «The flag of the aggressor country has no place next to the flag of the Holy See» — in Russian. According to Borisova, the leaflet hung for about five minutes and only one nun saw it. Sr Magdalina Filatova claimed that about fifty parishioners saw it, and she herself tore off the leaflet and threw it away. The church is located opposite the FSB HQ in Lubyanka.

On 20 July, the police arrived at Borisova’s home. She was taken to the police department of the Krasnoselsky district where a protocol was drawn up against her under part 1 of article 20.3.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. The leaflet was interpreted as a «public action» «aimed at discrediting the use of the armed forces […] for protection of the interests of the Russian Federation and its citizens.» The torn-up and glued-back-together leaflet was attached to the case file as material evidence. The OVD-Info Telegram channel reported that presumably Borisova was denounced by St Louis’ rector, Fr Vyacheslav Gorokhov, which resulted in the police report. However, Borisova deniedthis; she argued that the priest was forced to write a statement against her after she was identified from CCTV recordings, and the rector tried to annul his denunciation.

The Norwegian human rights organization, Forum-18, reported on 1 August that the case against Borisova was registered in the Meshchansky district court of Moscow. According to OVD-Info, she was fined 30 thousand rubles.

The rector of the Holy Spirit parish in Viciebsk.

He was detained on 15 July under part 1 of art. 24.23 (violation of the procedure for organizing or holding mass events) of the Code of Administrative Offences. He was kept in the Pieršamajski District Department of Internal Affairs in Viciebsk until the trial. The case file included a Facebook profile picture with a white-red-white flag, as well as other “protest” photos, including with the flag of Ukraine. He was subjected to a 15-day administrative arrest twice: on 18 July, then on 23 July it became known that he was re-arrested for another 15 days. Pro-government Telegram channels launched a discrediting campaign against him. On 15 August, he fled the country. On 9 September, the priest was fined in absentia 320 rubles under art. 19.10.

The rector of the St John Paul II parish in Smargoń (Hrodna region).

He was accused of distributing ‘extremist materials’ for reposting on Facebook publications of Belarusian independent media regarded by the regime authorities as ‘extremist’. On 8 July the priest was fined 20 basic units.

The rector of the St Kazimir parish in Stoŭbcy (Baranavičy region).

On 4 March 2022 he led a pilgrimage along the border with Ukraine with a statue of the Archangel Michael. During the event «exorcisms to expel the demon of war from the Kremlin were read”. On 20 April, the priest received a summons for “dissemination of extremist materials” (art. 19.11) on social media. The court hearing took place on 28 April. The priest was fined 30 base units.
